George Farris has obtained a building permit for a medical clinic foundation at 1935 First avenue SE east of Crescent street. The $15,000 foundation is to start this fall with a fireproof, staggered level design dependent on tenants. O F Paulsen Construction Co holds the contract. Farris has owned the site since June 22, 1946 after buying from the W N Treichler estate.

Fowl Lands Aboard Coast Guard Cutter Far at Sea

A screech fowl, a woodland bird seldom straying from its area, landed Friday aboard the coast guard cutter Barataria while 1,800 miles northeast of Boston, creating an odd at sea sighting.

Mamie Eisenhower Recovers After Plane Trip

President Eisenhower reported Saturday that his wife Mamie had recovered from a slight illness that kept her off the presidential plane on Friday night in Indianapolis. He told the audience the long flight had unsettled her but by Saturday aides said she no longer felt ill.

Lone Raftsman William Willis completes 115 day Pacific crossing

William Willis, a 61 year old New Yorker, reached American Samoa aboard a 35 foot balsa raft after 115 days at sea living on raw fish and seawater when his two sails and rudimentary stove failed. He was towed to port by a motor launch and greeted by Governor Richard Barrett Lowe and cheering crowds.

Truck Strike Disrupts New York Area Commerce

A 23 000 driver truck strike hits New York City and surrounding areas, disrupting freight for food, garments, defense, newsprint and exports. Emergency mediations failed. Four Are Injured in Head-on Collision

Four persons were injured in a head-on crash on highway 13 about 6 p m Friday just south of the Linn county farm. Earl F O'Brien 27 Central City and his two children Mike 3 Barbara Ann 1 were treated at Mercy hospital Cedar Rapids. Moraine 27 Coggan was in fair condition with possible fractures.
