Lights in hen houses do not raise yearly egg output study finds
Research by Joseph W. Kelly of Iowa State University shows that artificial lighting increases egg production mainly in fall and winter when prices are high, but reduces spring and summer output. He notes no change in overall yearly egg supply or hatchability, and cites benefits like reduced winter molt and faster development of some pullets. Five rules for lighting include age grouping, constant water and mash, regular hours, and ending lighting when day length exceeds 13 hours in April.
