The presidents of the three Regent universities in Iowa are asked to study several options to trim budgets. Potential measures include temporary salary reductions, temporary or permanent layoffs, and a tuition surcharge among other strategies to raise revenues.
The Iowa Board of Regents discussed seven to eight options for trimming the state DHS budget by 10 percent. David Miles urged Iowa and in state universities to craft plans by October 29, including reducing benefits delaying non essential repairs and selling non essential assets. The system faces nearly $60 million in current year cuts following an $86 million funding loss and an $80 million rescue.
Diane Held reports on UI Energy Hawks and 62 energy upgrades in UI Nursing Building aimed at cutting energy waste by 10 percent across 60 UI buildings. The effort could save hundreds of thousands of dollars as colleges pursue greener operations. Luther College plans a wind turbine to cover about one third of its annual energy use while President Sally Mason supports a campus sustainability office.
