Readiness debate at Linn-Mar meeting cites maturation over age

Kindergarten teacher Mrs. E. F. Thompson urged the Linn‑Mar school board to use maturity as a criterion for entrance. She cited Gesell Institute findings that 10–20 percent repeat a grade and that delaying one grade costs the district about 700 to 800 dollars per pupil. She urged careful screening and questioned reliance on IQ alone. The board also reviewed budget pressures and the district’s above-average per pupil cost, plus a bid change order for shop area heating and plans for a district survey on future needs.
