Bo James at 118 E Washington St in downtown Iowa City suffered a 3 am blaze started by an overheated light fixture. The fire caused about 200000 dollars in damage and displaced four apartments. Firefighters from multiple towns contained the fire to the front of the building and evacuated residents. No serious injuries besides a firefighter with a pulled back muscle. The owners plan to reopen in four to six weeks.
District Court Judge Dan Morrison moves the first degree murder and child endangerment trial of Rick L. Snow from Washington County to Poweshiek County. The trial will open November 1 in Montezuma. Snow faces charges in the Aug. 8 death of his 6 week old daughter Stephanie Kayleen Snow. He remains jailed on a $250000 bond. Washington County Attorney Gerald Partidge will prosecute.
Linn County Attorney Denver Dillard and Sheriff Dennis Blome asked for state or federal scrutiny into accusations that male jail deputies peeped on female prisoners during strip searches. Republican sheriff candidate Buzz Sawyer claimed the conduct and criticized Blome for negligence, citing loyal deputies and possible cover up.
