Grant diverted to Waterloo area projects from I 380 funding
Secretary Drew Lewis says a $4 million federal grant for a 7.3 mile I 380 segment near Waterloo will be withdrawn and reallocated to 98 local Waterloo projects. Rep. Cooper Evans notes the funds will support 23 new construction, 55 reconstruction, three safety upgrades, four bridges and 13 resurfacing efforts in the region.

Unemployment Benefits in Iowa Dip in September
Job Service of Iowa reports the average weekly unemployment insurance payout fell to about 4.5 million in September from 5 million in August due to re employment of temporarily laid off workers. Total benefits for September rose to 28.65 million, while the trust fund owed the federal government 26.10 million and paid 247.2 million to unemployed Iowans year to date.

Miner Blames Bankruptcy After Loss of University Contract
Dale Mich owner of Mich Coal Co filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after losing a University of Iowa coal contract worth about a third of his 120000 ton annual output. The company lists debts around 595547. The University awarded 110000 tons to ConAgra Commodities of Minneapolis, sourcing coal from an Indiana mine.
