Branstad urges early action on prison expansion

Gov. Terry Branstad told the Iowa State Policemen’s Association that the next legislative session should place approval of funding to add nearly 400 prison beds first on the agenda. He warned public safety would be threatened if community based corrections cannot expand, and noted no new narcotics programs were proposed, though Iowa is a major drug trafficking route.

Iowa Meets Health Objectives Acknowledged In State Report

Iowa is cited in a Public Health Foundation status report for meeting or surpassing several 1990 health objectives. The three year neonatal death rate of 5.6 per 1000 live births is below the 6.5 target, and Iowa is among states expected to meet the 5 percent low birth weight goal. The report notes gains in reducing gonorrhea and child drownings and motor-vehicle fatalities, but flags measles incidence and deaths by own action as areas unlikely to meet targets.
