Alaska voters swing to Democrats in 1956 general election
Alaska swung decisively to the Democrats with E. L. Bartlett widening his margin for Congress and a strong Democratic gain in the legislature. In Anchorage and Fairbanks districts, about 20 Democrats were elected to the legislature, reversing 1952 results. Bartlett led Barbara Dimock 9,443 to 3,639 on unofficial returns from 97 of 263 precincts.

Philip Partridge Jr formerly Highland county engineer was convicted by an all white jury of arson and burglary for burning Lincoln School to oppose school segregation. He received concurrent sentences of one to 10 years for arson and one to 15 years for burglary. He testified he acted after a 2 am pledge prompted by a sermon and a desire to speed integration. The Lincoln school had been segregated with Webster and Washington schools later admitting some Black students under rezoning. A related suit challenging the rezoning remains in the U S court of appeals in Cincinnati.
