Inmate speaker series eyed as college program at Iowa prison
Thirty three offenders at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Coralville take part in a fall speaker series on topics from World War I poetry to job interviews. Kathrina Litchfield, US Center for Human Rights programs coordinator, hopes the program grows into a college in prison program earning degrees with Pell funding revived by the Second Chance initiative. Prison education boosts post release employment and lowers recidivism, a RAND study notes, while one inmate Ari McKelvey cites education as key to identity and a better life beyond confinement.
