Davenport Iowa The defense told jurors the state has charged the wrong offense in the murder case of Leah Wara 17 of Hiawatha while noting they will hear judge instructed alternatives. Prosecutors promised a taped statement in which Hass 19 of Cedar Rapids described strangling Wara during a dispute. The trial heard seven witnesses including Wara’s parents as cross examination was limited.
The House approved a liberalized provision allowing federal Medicaid funding for abortions for poor rape or incest victims as part of a Labor and Health Services spending bill. The vote was 216 to 206 with Iowa delegates split, and supporters warned Bush may veto any such measure.

Regents staff propose a total 3 to 5 percent rise in tuition and student health fees for the state's three public universities, down from over 7 percent.
