Tex Williams, 68, Dies of Cancer in California Western Star
Tex Williams, 68, a country and western singer and first president of the Academy of Country and Western Music, died Friday after a long cancer battle at Newhall Community Hospital. A pioneer who recorded Smoke Smoke Smoke that Cigarette and appeared in Western films, he formed the Western Caravan in 1946 and signed with Capitol Records. He is survived by his wife Dallas, daughter Sandi Aiello, and a granddaughter.

Crash kills Otto man near Fort Dodge
A 41 year old Otto man Michael Fuller was killed when he lost control of his car and crashed into a ditch along a Webster County road about 12 miles southwest of Fort Dodge. He was thrown from the vehicle and died at a Fort Dodge hospital after being transported by ambulance, Webster County Sheriff's Department reported.

Teens charged in Cedar Rapids pickup theft case
Police say four teens broke into Jansen's Import Auto Center and stole a pickup, later found with gasoline stolen from Refuel. Charles Slocum 18 and Timothy Humphreys 18 face second-degree burglary and theft charges. a 17-year-old male and Denise Gates 18 are also charged. Several were released to guardians or on recognizance. Slocum remains in jail on bond.

Roosevelt Junior High School drama instructor Terry Vik, 31, was terminated from his district job. The Gazette reports Vik was arrested Monday on five counts of burglary and three counts of attempted burglary. He posted bail after a Friday bond reduction from 92 000 to 11 500 and is on probation for a 1981 theft conviction while awaiting trial. The alleged incidents occurred on Cedar Rapids northeast side.
