Francis T. Grady of 724 First Avenue NE received a seven year penitentiary term at Fort Madison after pleading guilty to 14 bad checks totaling 596.59 filed in Linn County District Court. He faces remaining charges of desertion and abandonment of minor children and bigamy, with a hold order from Johnson County for additional bad checks.
Two Cedar Rapids men, George L. Willits and Byron M. Knudson, pled innocent in district court to drunken driving charges. Willits, 34, faces a third offense after his car struck another vehicle at the intersection of B Avenue and Center Point Road NE, with a witness describing erratic driving. Knudson, 54, is charged with a first offense after his semi-trailer, carrying frozen turkeys for a Des Moines firm, damaged another vehicle and he drove away. The turkeys were later at a Cedar Rapids truck stop under police custody.
LeRoy Younger of Tipton was arraigned in Linn County district court on assault with intent to inflict great bodily injury after a tavern disturbance in Cedar Rapids Friday night. He faces an aggravated assault charge.
In Chicago a Soviet magazine shows a cutaway Sputnik diagram that mirrors a U.S. model first exhibited at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry in December 1955. Herbert R. Pfister of Popular Science built the 25‑pound, $125 model in one month and showcased it at Hayden Planetarium and the IGY committee offices.
Lester Gerholt of Evansdale filed a district court suit against Martin-Roasa Tractor and Equipment Co. of Cedar Rapids seeking rescission of a February contract for a heavy loading machine. He seeks 400 dollar judgment minus 14.08 dollar unpaid premium claiming policy cancellation lacked required notice and no due payment notice was sent.
Saturday rulings in Linn county district court included a default judgment for Witwer Grocer Company against Jessie Doudna for 122.03 with 45.54 owed and 76.49 assigned from Great Plains Supply. A second judgment awarded Caroline Fifield 55 for delinquent child support against Raymond Fifield.
A district court suit by Earl C. and Tolie Busenbark seeks foreclosure of a chattel mortgage against Everett Tony and Mary Nemer on fixtures and stock at 1201 Fifth Street NW. They request a receiver to recover 1910.43 on a 1951 promissory note of 1971.02.
