Polio Epidemic Tapers Off in Iowa in 1948
Iowa state health officials said polio cases show signs of a downtrend in 1948. Last week 84 cases were reported, down from a peak of 93 the prior week and 89 the week before. Through Saturday total cases reached 834, still below the 929 for all of 1940. One new county Union joined the list. nine counties reported no cases.

Towa City AP reports 11 year old Robert Perkins of Waterloo died Monday night from polio after admission earlier that day. Public health officials urged vaccination and reported no further cases at this time.

Large Cats Seen Near Martelle
A panther like large cat has been sighted near Martelle over recent weeks. Henry Weiderman saw a black panther style animal within 30 yards of his field while driving a tractor. Another farmer pursued a similar but smaller beast by car. it escaped. A hunt of 30 farmers on Oct 3 yielded no trace.

Residents dedicated a memorial park honoring all wars with a flag raising led by Mayor Herman Dunlap. A granite boulder with a bronze plaque was unveiled, and Rev. David Davids spoke. Gold Star families and servicemen attended a luncheon after a parade by the Hopkinton high school band and local veterans.

Iowa Methodists Fete Brashares and Wife in Des Moines
Five hundred Methodist ministers and laymen honored Bishop Charles W. Brashares and his wife at a First Methodist church dinner in Des Moines. The event祝 celebrated his reappointment for a second four year term in the area and wished them God speed on a three month trip starting Dec 4 to India and other parts of the Orient for church conclaves and world problems study. S. A. Cohagan presented Mrs. Brashares with a $3 431 check raised by Methodist clergy and laity for their support.

Services Wednesday For Tama Indian Vet
Private Robert Morgan, first Mesquakie Indian killed in World War II, will be honored with services at the Mesquakie United Presbyterian Church on the Tama reservation at 2 p.m. by Rev. F C Patterson. Full military and Indian rites will follow at Mesquakie cemetery. Born December 16 1924 he joined the service March 26 1943 and died December 2 1945 from wounds in Italy. Survived by mother Mrs John Morgan sister Mollie and brother John all on the Tama reservation. The Mesquakie Indian American Legion post at Tama is named in his honor. He was one of two Mesquakie Indians killed in action, Clement Muskemo dying on Saipan.

Ames Veterinarian Dies After Car Crash
Dr. C. M. Morgan, 66, Ames veterinarian, died Monday night of a heart attack following injuries from a two car collision on a country road three miles southwest of Ames. He suffered a broken hip in the crash.
