Allies Hit Jap Plane Tender Near Solomons
Lockheed medium bombers of the SW Pacific air force scored two direct hits on a 10,000 ton Japanese seaplane tender south of New Ireland in the Bismarck Solomon area. The vessel, likely a converted merchantman, was heavily damaged and motionless after bombs hit its upper deck. American air forces also bombed enemy supply lines from Kokoda to Buna with A-20s and Bell Airacobras, hitting villages used as retreat bases and strafing installations. All planes returned safely and ground fighting around the Owen Stanley mountains remained quiet.
