Iowa officials voice support for high speed rail plan

Iowa Transportation Commission members backed pursuing a Midwest high speed rail corridor, linking Chicago Davenport and Iowa City to ease I-80 congestion and reduce oil use. The $4.1 billion project would rely largely on federal funding with a 2001 study due for completion, Amtrak would run the service, speeds would reach 110 mph in Illinois and up to 79 mph in Iowa, and track upgrades may be needed for faster trains.

Ames Highgrad faces charges in multiple killings

Robert Merlin Spangler, 67, extradited from Mesa County Colorado to face federal charges in the 1993 death of his third wife Donna Spangler at Grand Canyon National Park. Colorado authorities plan charges in 1978 killings of his first wife Nancy and two children, with earlier suspicions on subsequent spouses. He confessed recently and is ill with cancer.
