Ford to supply Israel advanced anti tank system

The United States will provide Israel a new highly sophisticated anti tank missile system within existing military aid. Israel will also receive 1.5 billion in direct military aid and 800 million in economic assistance. The deal avoids any cost increase in current aid and does not include the Pershing missile. Israel’s deputy premier said the US is living up to commitments with no new arms agreement in the works.

Carter Sees Excellent Chance In Election Campaign

Jimmy Carter claimed an excellent chance to win in November as he courted ethnic voters in Chicago during Columbus Day events. He spoke to about 50 Democratic committee members and urged unity as the campaign enters its final four weeks, stressing human rights and recession relief. He attended a Columbus Day mass at Our Lady of Pompeii with notable protests outside and later marched toward Wisconsin, winning warm receptions from Polish Americans, Greek Americans, Italian Americans, and Black voters amid a citywide push for electoral votes. State Aide Endorses SWAT Action In Horton Shooting

A state aide ruled the SWAT team's actions in the Horton incident justified and proper under the circumstances after an Aug. 19 barricade and fatal confrontation. The report notes Horton, 46, barricaded in an apartment from 10 45 p.m. to 4 30 a.m., tear gas used, officers failed to persuade surrender, and Horton had a prior mental hospital stay and Kentucky assault warrant.Police Officer Robert L. Balk by Tradesmen Threatens Ford Pact

The tentative settlement in Ford Motor Co. union talks faces trouble as early returns show skilled tradesmen at Local 800 and members at Ford Ohio Truck Plant rejecting the three year contract. Production workers largely supported it, but both groups must approve for end of the strike. Local 200 in Avon Lake saw 73 percent of production workers and 80 percent of skilled workers vote against the pact.

Inmates Charged in Linn County Jail Disturbance

Two Linn County inmates, James Ashby and Brian Varner, face resisting execution of process charges after a Sunday evening jail melee in which jailer Richard Pierce was overpowered and keys taken. Varner also charged with malicious injury to a building. incident prompted by complaints about jail conditions and spurred by a TV interview. Deputies and officers eventually forced the inmates to surrender after a scuffle in the cell block. intercom failure delayed notice of the disturbance.
