New York AP report notes the Dun and Bradstreet wholesale food price index fell for the fourth week, easing two cents to $6.48. The index retreat places it near the July 25 level from a high of $6.69 set on August 29, indicating a continuing downward drift in wholesale food costs.
Government spot check shows retail food prices up 1.4 percent in the last two weeks of September, lifting overall levels 2.7 percent above the June 15 prewar peak.
The Cedar Rapids traffic bureau of the Chamber of Commerce hosts the third annual trout luncheon at the Montrose Hotel on Thursday noon. Chester Ainsworth led the drive, guiding 18 anglers who netted 444 trout from Big Springs Trout Club waters at elkader. The fish cost $1 a pound, and the event feeds more than 125 invited traffic men with prepared trout dishes.

Cedar Rapids police detained a Chicago man and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Preston Geis, on burglary charges in West Allis Wisconsin after they were spotted exiting a Greyhound bus at 6 45 a m. Authorities were alerted earlier by a West Department call.
Mayor Andy Johnston of Springville was elected president of the East Central Iowa Peace Officers Association at a Tuesday night meeting. He succeeds coroner C. C. Van Dyke of North English. Other officers named were Joe Smith as vice president and Bill Remington as secretary treasurer. Dean Mason Ladd of the University of Iowa law school spoke as about 135 officers attended.

Pittsburgh AP report says United States Steel Corporation will open wage negotiations with the CIO United Steelworkers on Monday in Pittsburgh. A Great Western freight train received two traffic summonses in Des Moines. Conductor Robert Howery was cited for blocking automobile traffic at the Easton Boulevard crossing, with 12 curbliners and hundreds of cars affected. Yardmaster H. M. Wheeler was later cited for blocking traffic at Ninth Street. Both must appear in municipal court on October 18.
Attorney for Ralph Smith dismissed one $2,725 suit and opened another against Northwestern National Insurance Co and George H. Cockburn over a Dec 6 1947 collision on highway 30 near Marshalltown. The new petition seeks $500 for a passenger injury, $500 for another passenger, $1,225 for a wrecked car, and $2,725 total for alleged in force insurance. The earlier suit filed Nov 23 1949 repeats the same claims, with the second filing cited to correct errors in the first.
Rex J Darrah 24 of Davenport was returned to Linn County from Wapello County to face breaking and entering charges. Deputy Harlan Snyder said Darrah admitted breaking into the O R Drive In Herb s Barbeque and the Knotty Pine on Sept 9 1949. Snyder noted accomplice Archie Day received a suspended 10 year sentence Jan 11 1950 while Darrah was serving a one year term in Ottumwa. About 400 dollars was reported missing in the three break ins.

Taipei based AP dispatch reports the Chinese Nationalist defense ministry claiming millions of Chinese will perish as slave laborers in Siberia under Soviet imperialism. The ministry asserts Soviet expansion threatens China and brands the Soviets as worse than former Japanese invaders.
Dublin AP report says Ireland may close some prisons as only 69 men and 62 women are jailed, mostly short-termers. Justice Minister Sean MacEnroy told Dublin Chamber of Commerce the five prisons may not be sustainable if inmate levels stay low.
Mrs. Ralph Sullivan, 32, of Marion, sustained minor cuts and bruises when the car she rode in collided with a panel truck at Bever Avenue and Fifteenth Street SE. She was taken to St. Luke's Hospital for treatment. Police identified the truck driver as Wilbur Miller, 814 Third Avenue SE.
Karen Grimm four year old of Dysart was admitted to Mercy hospital on Tuesday as a polio patient. Her condition Wednesday was reported good by the hospital.
Iowa Attorney General Robert Larson announced a forthcoming grand jury investigation into slot machine gambling in Crescent, Pottawattamie County. He cited tips and a council Bluffs Nonpareil report, said agents checked Crescent taverns with no findings, and warned subpoenas will be issued to sources and reporters.
Prof E H Neville told the British Association mathematics and physics section that two and two do not make four. He argued mathematics is wet and that defining a straight line or asserting abstract numbers is questionable. He cited an early author defining mathematics as a subject where we never know what we are talking about.
Northwestern law professor Fred E Inbau argues for secret police interrogations as necessary for public safety. He told nearly 100 prosecutor colleagues that secrecy preserves emotional confessions and enables effective crime prevention.
The Universal Match Corporation announces a water resistant striking strip for its book matches. After 15 years of research the strip can be saturated with water and still light a match, though the matches themselves remain non waterproof. The strip will be gray for easy identification.
Webster New York police report Clinton Barker and his wife had a flat tire on an emergency trip to Rochester from Ontario when a passing motorist called an ambulance. The ambulance arrived too late and the Barker child was born soon after.
Joseph J. Hicksa, 58, longtime Cedar Rapids resident, died Tuesday in Portland Oregon. Born March 1 1892 in Czechoslovakia, he lived in Cedar Rapids for many years before moving to Portland several years ago. Services were held Thursday in Portland.
Services for Wendl Z Skalicky of 1911 E street SW will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Janeba funeral home by Rev. Zdenek F. Pauk. Burial will be in Bohemian National cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.

Foreman Louis Picek halted thefts at the Cherry Burrell Corporation plant after spotting Lewis Thomas drop a package from a rear window. Police recovered a $40 cutting torch, a $30 electric drill, and a $5 steel peg. two employees, George Schmitt and Lewis Thomas, pled guilty to larceny and received suspended sentences of two and four months respectively.
More than 400 Baptists at the Iowa convention in Davenport studied a parish zoning plan outlined by Dr. Paul Smith of Fort Dodge. He said 20 ministers at the convention will use the plan, aiming to implement it in all Baptist churches in the state. The Rev. Stanley A. Anderson of Mr. Pleasant was elected president of the Iowa ministers conference and named officers for western eastern and central areas. The convention ends Thursday.
Remmer Dinkla 63, a Massena farmer, died in an Omaha hospital from injuries after a car collision near his farm. He was leaving his driveway onto Highway 148 when his vehicle struck the right front side of a car driven by neighbor John Kopp 29 on the highway.
A postal substation will operate in the drug department of the new People's Foodway at 1000 Second Avenue SE starting Thursday with the market opening. Assistant Postmaster Walter Anawalt said the substation was formerly located in a pharmacy at 511 Third Avenue SE.
A 14 year old girl in Chicago helped stop a two month old baby's abduction by identifying Lawrence Rucker, 29, as he neared officers. Rucker claimed he found the child wandering and planned to alert police. The baby was unharmed. Rucker had a prior larceny and vagrancy record and was held for questioning.
In Cedar Rapids an army recruiting sergeant sits at a Federal Building desk with a downcast look as enlistment numbers slump. A publicized attraction about short-term enlistments is clarified: new entrants with no prior service may enlist for 21 months if aged 19 to 25, or 24 months if outside that age band.
The American Lutheran church moves toward uniting over 1 500 000 members by forming a nine member committee to discuss merger with the Evangelical and United Evangelical Lutheran churches.
