A foggy start gave way to sun as Cedar Rapids temperatures climbed to 78 by mid afternoon. Readings show a low of 52 in the morning with a peak of 78 by 2 40 p m and other noted values from 7 30 to 8 45 a m and 7 p m to midnight.

An 18 year old driver, Bob Hubacek of Ivanhoe road SW, escaped injury when pavement suddenly collapsed under his car at Eighth Avenue and First Street SW at 1115 p.m. Thursday. The crater under the surface measured about 15 feet deep and 10 feet across, with a four foot opening at the pavement. City workers investigated the cave-in as damage to the left rear of the vehicle was reported.
