Energy saving tips for farmers from GAO report

The GAO outlines energy saving methods for farms including efficient grain drying, regular tractor tune ups, proper tire inflation, correct gear use, radial tires, and improved fuel handling. Shelterbelts and windbreaks, conservation tillage, and careful water and fertilizer use are urged. The USDA and GAO clash over promotion and practicality, while farmers show limited enthusiasm and perceive risk in changing methods. A dam disaster in 1963 Italy is noted in passing.

Subtle farming changes expected into the 1990s

Veteran agronomist Marlin Edwards outlines modest shifts for farmers by 1990. Expect greater use of animal manure and legumes, reduced tillage to save energy and conserve soil, and closer attention to crop residue and seedbed prep. Fast-maturing corn and rapid dry-down will aid profitability and marginal yield.
