In Moscow reports Hitler presses a major offensive as the Red Army fights to keep its fighting force intact. British morale and support for the Russians comes under fire as Britain delays decisive action while U.S. and British industry rushes to arm the massive allied force.
Soviet lines report that Hitler’s encirclement scheme near Moscow failed while Red Army reserves pour in. Despite German advances in Bryansk and Vyazma sectors, Red Star and front dispatches note Russian counterattacks and escapes, with air power asserting parity or superiority. Odessa bombardment continues with limited success for attackers.

Cedar Rapids superintendent Arthur Deamer, after 20 years leading Cedar Rapids schools, is endorsed to be president of the Iowa State Teachers Association. The election occurs after the 87th annual convention in Des Moines November 6 to 8, with Deamer as the sole candidate.

Retail food costs in Cedar Rapids rose 17 percent between August 12 and September 16 this year while the U S figure for the nation climbed about 26 percent. Fruits and vegetables fell, cereals and bakery products up 0.8 percent, meats 2.6, dairy 2.6, eggs 7.6, beverages 2.7, fats and oils 2.1, and sugar 2.6.
