The University of Iowa invites the public to a 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. reception for Provost Wallace Loh and his wife Barbara at the Levitt Center fourth floor assembly halls with a 5:30 p.m. program. Loh began as provost August 1.
The University of Iowa received the 2008 Iowa Recycling Association Best Practices Award for campus recycling efforts. The award was given Oct. 7 in Ottumwa alongside other honors. UI’s recycling rose to 19.8 percent of weight diverted from landfills, with more than 2,085 tons recycled.
Decorah Iowa Luther College will join a Rocky Mountain Institute project to accelerate campus climate-change actions. The college is among 12 selected schools to develop plans and pursue funding partners to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent, with site visits and a workshop guiding implementation and eligibility for grants.
A Des Moines AP report notes that 131 Iowa cities and counties have not signed up for the National Flood Insurance Program despite a summer of record flooding. Readlyn joined this year, while Readlyn Mayor Clem en says residents with homes in the flood plain must decide on enrollment and potential insurance requirements.
