Supreme Court orders new trial in murder case
The Iowa Supreme Court on a 6-0 vote reversed the appeals court and ordered a new trial for Valerie L. Reeves of Normal Illinois in the 1997 Sabula shooting death of Eugene Malone. Justices ruled the evidence did not prove premeditation and the shooting appeared to be a panic-driven act. Reeves was convicted of second degree murder in 1998 and sentenced to 50 years. prosecutors consider options for retrying or charging a lesser offense.

Anamosa Man Dies in Auto Accident
Dustin Gracey, 20, of Anamosa, was killed when a car driven by Taran Evans, 19, of Grand Junction, went off County Road E-384 near Anamosa and struck a utility pole. Quinton Edwards, 17, of Marengo, and Evans were injured. Gracey’s grandmother described him as a fun loving father and worker.

Buchanan meningitis case not related to three others
A 5-year-old Amish boy in Buchanan County has a type Y bacterial meningitis case unrelated to three earlier cases in Black Hawk County. Health officials stress no mass vaccination is needed, and there is no person-to-person transmission indicated. Two Black Hawk cases included a 20-year-old UNI student and a 29-year-old Waterloo woman who died, while a 20-year-old Hawkeye student is recovering in Iowa City.
