Polish exile Milosz wins Nobel Prize in literature

Czeslaw Milosz, a Polish poet living in the United States since 1960, wins the 1980 Nobel Prize in literature. The 69 year old Berkeley Slavic languages professor reacts modestly, saying the honor favors writers of less known languages and those writing in foreign tongues. The Swedish Academy cites his work for clear, uncompromising insight into human conflicts. The prize amounts to 212000 dollars. Milosz is the first Nobel literature laureate from Lithuania.
