Field Selected Near Waterloo For State Husking Meet

WATERLOO AP Along the rows of tall corn on the A. J. Hansen farm near here will go the state's stellar corn shuckers Nov. 1 in their quest for the 1934 state husking title. Selection of the Hansen field as the site for the annual classic was announced today by Manager W. E. Drips of Des Moines who chose it from among seven fields which had been considered. Yielding an estimated seventy five bushels an acre, the fifty acre field affords a favorable location for the nubbin derby, Drips believes. Six miles west of Waterloo, the farm will be easily reached by the thousands of spectators which the event attracts. Preparation of the field will get under way shortly under the affec tion of the Waterloo Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Black Hawk county Farm Bureau, sponsors, Lands of four eighty row rows will be laid out for each contestant. About twenty five contestants, winners of the county and district meets to be held over the state in the next three weeks, will go into the state classic this year. Between thirty and forty such preliminary contests probably will be staged. The drought which cut corn production in the southern counties will not materially affect the contests, Drips said, since additional northern county representatives will be entered in meets this year, Three counties already have set dates for their contests and others are expected to do so shortly. That for Scott county will be held Oct. 27, Louisa county's meet on Oct. 15, and Black Hawk's Oct. 23. The last year's champion state shocker, Clarence Bockes of Grundy Center, has been tuning up his throwing arm on his home field and is preparing to defend his title, Drips said.
