Afghan factions clash as regional control shifts
In Afghanistan, the northeast remains under Northern Alliance influence while the Taliban controls the rest. Ongoing skirmishes cause a fluid boundary as forces clash and territorial control continually shifts.
Northern Alliance Faces Decline Amid Taliban Resurgence
The United Nations recognizes the Northern Alliance as Afghanistan's legitimate government, yet it now controls less than 10 percent of the country. Based in the northeast, this mujahedin faction, formed by ethnic and religious minorities, opposed the Taliban's rule and once ruled from 1992 to 1996 before infighting allowed the Taliban to seize power. Ahmed Shah Massood, its charismatic leader, was fatally wounded by a suicide bombing this September.
