Cedar Rapids resident Betty Nollen cleans offices as flood recovery work continues under the Emergency Public Jobs Program. The program, funded by a National Emergency Disaster Grant and run through Kirkwood Community College, offers temporary disaster recovery jobs in Iowa counties eligible for federal aid.
Iowa City officials said 41 properties qualify for buyouts under FEMA rules. Most are along Normandy Drive and Taft Speedway riverfront, though not all homes in the area qualify. City leaders discussed flood protection options and the potential impact of nonbuyout homes on future mitigation efforts.
City Hall will recommend awarding a demolition contract to D W Zinser Co for 72 flood damaged structures at an estimated 1.64 million dollars. Demolitions could start quickly at about two homes daily, with Bamaco Inc previously the leading bidder at higher cost and having challenged the city in Linn County court.
