Dozens of New York mothers were arrested during a sit in at P S 149 in Jackson Heights Queens for opposing an integration program that moved their children from the neighborhood school. Police reported 65 adults charged with loitering near a school and one man with felonious assault.

Cardinals Triumph 9-5 In World Series Opener

The St. Louis Cardinals scored four runs in the sixth to defeat the New York Yankees 9-5 in Game 1 of the 1964 World Series. Key plays included Carl Warwick driving in Tim McCarver and Curt Flood's triple. The Yankees struggled with timely outs and a home run by Tresh plus double by Mantle, but could not stop a Cardinal burst.

Gillis Charged in Miss Bombings Also Held in Bank Robbery

FBI arrest of 35 year old Sterling Bubba Gillis from McComb ties him to racial bombings and a March 2 hold up of the Lawrence County bank at Monticello where $40 000 was taken and $1800 found on him. Witnesses identified him as the gunman who forced teller Frank Allen and others to fill a bag with cash after locking workers in the vault. Gillis was jailed on explosives charges in McComb and held on the bank robbery charges as the FBI reported.

Army Helicopter Shot Down West of Saigon

A U S Army helicopter with five Americans and a Vietnamese aboard was shot down 13 miles west of Saigon. All six aboard were presumed killed, with three bodies found charred and three missing. A second helicopter nearby survived and returned to base. A Mohawk plane was disabled 70 miles west of Saigon. both crews parachuted and were rescued.

President Johnson denounced Republican farm policy as heartless economic nonsense and vowed to strengthen and improve the farm program to achieve parity of opportunity for rural America. Speaking from the Iowa Capitol steps, he warned ending price supports would cut net farm income by about six billion dollars and promoted a responsible campaign.
