Five Seek Mayor Post In Cedar Rapids Race

Cedar Rapids voters will choose a mayor and several other officials after petitions were filed by Art Adams Horace Adams Gates George Farmer in the final hours before the 5 p.m. deadline. Two declared parks commissioner hopefuls Eugene Boyle and Don ald Randall failed to file. The mayoral field expands to six with Adams Gates and Farmer all filing late. Hullinger faces Farmer for the council seat in a duel that will not appear in the Oct 20 primary due to state law. The November election will decide the mayor and council seats.

Courthouse Concession Rights disputed by Linn County Board

The Linn County board of supervisors debated who may authorize sales of candy gum and tissues at the courthouse. Lundstrom, operating a coffee bar, claimed exclusive rights, but the board and officials acknowledged no clear understandings exist. Two Charged With Killing Own Children

Iowa news reports murder charges against Archie Burkey 32 of Wyoming Iowa and Lovita Stone 25 of Burlington for infanticide. Burkey, night marshal, allegedly shot his 23 month old son Gregory Lee Burkey who died at University Hospitals Iowa City. Stone allegedly killed her 3 year old daughter with a 12 gauge shotgun after tucking her into bed.

Man and Woman Held One Sought $600,000 Ransom Paid

FBI said Bobby Greenlease, six, abducted Sept 28 from a Kansas City school for 600000 ransoms was found dead in a St Joseph grave. Carl Hall and Bonnie Heady held in St Louis. Marsh at large. Hall implicated Heady. ransom money traced via cab and mailbox calls.

Wilson says Soviet atomic program far behind

Secretary of Defense Wilson argues the Russians are three to four years behind the United States in atomic weapons. He doubts Russia has a usable hydrogen bomb now and says they are not ready to wage sustained atomic war within three years. Chairman Cole agrees Russia may soon have an H bomb arsenal and urges immediate multi billion dollar defenses. No intelligence reports cited.

Legion To Honor 200 Korean War Veterans Tonight

Hanford will honor 200 Korean War veterans in Memorial Coliseum with a 7 45 p m program. Elmer Ferriter, program chairman, says five veterans four men and one woman will represent each service branch and receive certificates of honor. Beverly Gould will represent women veterans. Dewey and Almy Chemical Company plans a 50 percent expansion of its Cedar Rapids Cryovac division facilities. Plant Manager Manning C. Morrill announced an investment exceeding 1 million dollars for Cryovac bags used by meat poultry and cheese packers. The Cedar Rapids project awarded to Abell Howe will extend Wilson Avenue and increase capacity toward about 400 workers.

Killing Frost in Northeast Iowa

Parts of northeast Iowa recorded the first killing frost with lows in the teens to 30s across Elkader Lansing Decorah and Waukon while Cedar Rapids saw a 33 degree low after a 51 degree high. The drought worsened with September rainfall at 0.93 inch, the six driest on record, and forecasters warned of limited relief possibly delaying winter wheat sowing and harvest fire safety.
