In Cedar Rapids primary races Thomas and Pernicka won spots in the streets and parks contests. Thomas, a civil engineer, led with 3 446 votes and 38.22 percent, while Pernicka edged Bassett for the second spot by 91 votes. Kramer and Hughes advanced in the parks race. The top two proceed to the November election with other council seats on the ballot.
