Cedar Rapids city officials reduced door key numbers in the water works meter department after a three year effort. Late in 1965 the city limited entry to homes with occupant absence and key totals dropped from over 4500 to about 15 as more measures were installed.
The water department promotes outside Read-a-matic meters and other options after police and city lawyers warn lost or misused keys could create liability. About 2,500 devices were installed in a year as 30,000 meters are read every two months. Some residents remain unavailable for readings, triggering letters and potential high bills.
Adrienne Strong who runs a local marriage bureau in Nottingham canceled registration fees for one day for girls between 18 and 21 to balance the books. The event aimed to attract eligible bachelors and boost the bureau’s finances amid surplus lists.
