Israeli jets struck Syrian SAM-9 emplacements east of Beirut and along the Beirut Damascus highway in apparent retaliation for an ambush near Aley that killed six Israeli soldiers and wounded 22. The attacks, amid Lebanese sectarian fighting, drew a cautious U.S. response and targeted enemy batteries.
