The federal government and the NAACP pursued two new legal moves in Arkansas and Virginia where schools remain closed to block integration. In St Louis the appeal seeks an injunction against leasing Little Rock high schools to a private firm for segregated operation. The NAACP petitions to reopen Charlottesville Virginia and Warren County and Norfolk cases seek court orders to resume desegregated schooling. Gov Faubus vows no reopening on a nonsegregated basis.

Three Die in Rural Crash Near Hazleton
Special to The Gazette reports a two car collision three miles south and two east of Hazleton killed Larry DeMuth 11 Marion and two women Mrs. Lawrence DeMuth 43 and Mrs. Raymond Luloff 45. Janice DeMuth 14 survived with a broken arm and cuts. The DeMuth family recently moved to Marion from Stanley area.

Center Point Woman Accidentally Shot
Center Point Mrs. Herbert Sherman, 38, was in critical condition at University Hospitals in Iowa City after an accidental self-inflicted gunshot just below the heart while unloading a pistol at home. Family said she and son in law Don Schoebert and daughter had just returned from a rat hunting trip to the city dump. She was unconscious when admitted and to undergo surgery.

Rescuers Bring Down Injured Youth From Mt Olympus
