Safety Commissioner Floyd Bergen at 57 clings to his day job while rival O Jaeger campaigns for City Council. Jaeger resigns police duties to run. Cathy Mayor, the only woman candidate, defends her qualifications despite family ties.
Attorney John Schlie praises the newly remodeled safety commissioner's office in City Hall and plans regular meetings with the public beat cops and line firefighters. He says clear communication and addressing city issues will guide his approach as commissioner.
ISU farming college enrollment dropped below 2000 for the first time since 1964 as the farm crisis lingers. Despite rising farm demand, students defer careers in agriculture, though employers seek graduating seniors for roles in livestock feed, supply, and processing with salaries around 20 to 25 thousand dollars.
