Armed Forces Eastern Iowans Receive Viet Nam Medals
Iowa soldiers and airmen from Tipton Olin Manchester Calmar Ames and surrounding areas received medals and promotions for Vietnam service. Seaman John C. Burroughs earned the Gold Star in lieu of a second Purple Heart, while Army Sergeant Bruce A. Hay and Chaplain Donald L. Neely received Purple Heart and Commendation medals for wounds and heroism. Maj. John D. Hunt earned the Air Medal after more than 100 flights in Vietnam. Promotions included Gary L. Bergeron and Aulden A. Adams to specialist ranks, Jerald C. Bohstedt as 1st lieutenant, and others cited as top performers in Cedar Rapids reserve duties. Maj. Lois L. Westerfield, Cedar Rapids, became an early female staff member at the Military Advisory Command in Vietnam. Two air force members, Sergeants Stockman and Beyer, are on leave en route from training bases to assignments abroad. Zero in on a want ad and sell those useful but no longer needed items.

Iowa Workforce Edges Down but Remains Higher Than 1967
Iowa’s total work force fell 59,800 from July to 1,255,100 in August mostly due to seasonal agricultural declines. Unemployed dropped 4,800 to 28,800 and the unemployment rate eased to 2.3 percent from 2.6 percent. Nonfarm wage and salary employment rose by 2,400 to 869,800, aided by manufacturing gains offset by a 100 worker nonmanufacturing loss.
