Fall color moves south across Iowa with peak in mid October
North to south progression of fall colors noted with sumac and Virginia creeper turning red and gold. Local observers predict a near average color season, aided by cool nights and sunny days, with peak viewing in central Iowa mid October and southern areas later in the month. The Great River Road and state scenic byways offer prime overlooks and river reflections enhance color, while officials cite Mount Hosmer, Effigy Mounds, Pikes Peak, Bellevue parks, and river drives as top viewpoints.
