Craemer's Store begins a three day opening of its newly completed second floor. The remodel is part of a long range plan to upgrade the building. UAW chief Reuther secured gains in the GM settlement including an end to the 71 hour work day for some workers and a five cent an hour premium for those on non standard weeks such as boiler firing. GM also agreed to study wage inequities.
Wilber Kranz, 16, a bystander at the Kieper garage, suffered severe burns when a panel truck work scene caused a gas leak and an explosion about 4 15 in Newhall. He is in poor condition at St Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids. The garage owner and his son had minor burns. Damage was minor.

He laments the shift from reverent old time doctors who stayed by patients and their families through night cures to clinicians seen as highly paid technicians.
Thurman Whiteside a Miami lawyer pled innocent to corrupt influence on Friday. Former FCC Commissioner Richard Mack did not appear for arraignment, claiming treatment in a Miami hospital. Judge Burnita Matthews set Whiteside’s trial for January 6 and ordered a week to check Mack’s condition. bond for Whiteside was set at $1,000.

Des Moines AP Former Iowa Governor Leo Hoegh now heads the U S civilian defense and mobilization directorate. He told a Chamber of Commerce luncheon that fallout shelters offer the best non military protection. He cited a hypothetical 20 million ton blast at Nebraska’s edge spreading fallout to Iowa within six hours.
The Federal Power Commission postponed opening oral argument in the Midwest natural gas case from Oct. 9 to Oct. 14 to allow discussion of exceptions to an initial decision by Presiding Examiner Francis L. Hall. Deadline for exceptions is Oct. 13. Hall recommended limited service expansion and new connections in 134 communities across Iowa Minnesota South Dakota and Nebraska.
A petition filed in federal district court accuses Cizek Manufacturing and Distributing Company of infringing patents held by Roof Manufacturing Company of Pontiac Illinois. The case seeks an injunction against production and damages for alleged infringements tied to a mowing machine and variable pitch mower patents. Two posttrial motions by Frank Illingworth were denied. a prior $3,489 judgment against Illingworth stands.
A young man in overalls anonymously gave Anglican churches in Middlesbrough large sums. On Thursday the donor left 1,050 pounds in old five pound notes for the Mother Superior at the Convent of the Holy Rood. On Friday he delivered 550 pounds to Rev. W. Walker at All Saints Church. He said the gifts came from his father and declined thanks.
A widowed swallow, rescued in northern Sweden after a sudden snowfall, was flown to Rome with two eggs while her mate died after overeating. The birds were fed insects flown in from Denmark and scheduled to travel with a Rome bound passenger plane from Stockholm.
Donald O. Roff, a 51 year old state prisoner serving 30 years for check forgery, failed in his bid to sue Cedar Rapids and three police officers for 110000. Judge J E Heiserman ruled the alleged acts were governmental in nature and dismissed the case, also against the officers for vague naming.
A Linn county jury awarded the estate of Mac Wenskunas ten thousand nine hundred eighty eight dollars and eighty five cents after an auto collision suit. Plaintiffs Raymond J. Byers and Stella Yanush of Decatur represented the estate against Boris Luhanov of Warren Ohio and James Luhan of Las Vegas Nevada.
Vandalism occurred at the Milton Sarchett residence on Old Ivanhoe Road about three miles from town. Police investigated the scene and secured the property for assessment and repair.
In Constantine France Premier De Gaulle urged Algerian rebels to quit the insurrection and promised a five year program to lift Moslems in Algeria. He pledged continued ties to France, elections within two months under French rules, and at least two thirds Moslem representation. He outlined land, jobs, housing, and education measures to win support.
In a report to the sheriff's office on Friday Satchett said four tires were slashed and telephone wires and a power line were cut east of Hunter airport. Authorities are investigating the vandalism incident.
Linn county relief payments for September totaled 126,438 dollars, up 1,376 from August. Aid to dependent children led the rise with 44,830 dollars, up 1,915. Old age assistance fell to 74,316, down 570, while aid to the needy blind reached 7,292, up 31.
Keith H. Ehlers of Cedar Rapids was sentenced to up to 10 years in the Anamosa reformatory after a jury found him guilty of forging a $400 check last June. Sentencing followed a September 17 verdict. John O. Miller of Vinton received a suspended 60 day sentence after pleading guilty to gross fraud for passing a false $31.50 check at Fairfax last May and has made restitution. Mrs. Roland Drafahl of 504 Jave NW received a suspended 30 day term after pleading guilty to giving false statements to obtain aid.
Beulah Powers has $169.07 on account. Judge B J Maxwell awarded no damages in a collision lawsuit. Plaintiff William R Wagaman sought $120.04 and defendant Omer R Peiffer sought $100.39 in a cross petition.
Donald K. Neal, 18, of near Mt. Vernon appeals a Marion police court conviction and a $10 fine for speeding.
The city council approved turning Cottage Grove and Forest Drive SE into a four way stop and installing a stop on Liberty Drive SE for Forest Drive. The change awaits pavement curing and a traffic count to confirm the intersection status near Washington High School.
