Sioux City AP Edward L. O Connor one of twenty joint defendants in a conspiracy to operate gambling houses and devices in Woodbury county will be tried in October. Judge Earl Peters said the order may not fix O Connor as first defendant and will allow the state to decide trial order while motions are disposed of. Hearing on motions is set for next Monday with trials to begin after.
President Roosevelt appointed Major General Malin Craig, then commandant of the War College, as chief of staff of the Army to succeed General Douglas MacArthur. Craig’s term is four years, with Simonds remaining deputy chief of staff. Roosevelt signed the order before boarding the cruiser Houston for a Pacific cruise.
World wheat values jumped on news of an Italian invasion of Ethiopia. Chicago, Minneapolis, and Kansas City markets hit the five cent limit. Winnipeg closed three cents higher. European markets posted new highs with Rotterdam and Liverpool also up. December highs: Minneapolis 1.27 1/2, Kansas City 1.10, Winnipeg 0.96 1/2, Liverpool 0.97.
Governor Clyde Herring directed three state agents to join a grand jury inquiry into seals used by bootleggers linked to the Iowa Liquor Commission. He criticized lax handling of the seals, said indictments against Liquor Chairman Bernard E Manley were aimed at discrediting the system, and noted cross-state concern from bootleggers about the Iowa model.
Polk county grand jury heard Liquor Chairman B. E. Manley for about an hour as Burkman continued inquiry into liquor seals. Barkeep Eddie Condon and Liquor Commission Agent Rich Anderson waited to testify.
Greece acted to meet a possible naval and land emergency as the Italo-Ethiopian conflict looms. About 25 000 to 30 000 conscripts from the 1934 class were ordered to remain under arms indefinitely. The war minister also urged extending naval service to eighteen months from a year.
