The city formally regains its old name St Petersburg after residents voted in June to revert from Leningrad. The change, supported by 5 million residents, marks the third rename since its founding by Peter the Great in 1703. officials say the transition will cost about 21 million dollars.
Binney & Smith Co. announced the return of amber and lemon yellow along with five other colors that were retired last year. The colors will reappear through January in a 64 crayon tin priced at 6.99 dollars.

Cedar County authorities mount a statewide search for a gunman who killed Thomas Mather at his Cedar County home near Springdale. The suspect, white about 30, six feet tall, was last seen fleeing in blue jeans and jacket toward Lisbon prompting large scale checks in Linn County. Dawn Mather survived the attack as investigators probe motive and intruder details as the hunt continues.
Iowa teachers face high rates of physical abuse verbal abuse robbery theft and vandalism according to a 1988 report by the National Education Goals Panel While some officials express disbelief others cite rising societal violence and insufficient parenting as factors The report notes 14 percent of teachers physically attacked 72 percent verbally abused 76 percent reporting theft and 82 percent vandalism Page 9A continues on Violence.
Mark Herrig, distraught after the death of hunting partner William Berendes, killed himself days after Berendes was believed to have died in a hunting accident. Authorities probe whether Berendes was killed by Herrig’s rifle while both men hunted near Dubuque.
Rep Jim Nussle along with freshmen Republicans demanded the release of names of House members who bounced checks at the House bank after a GAO audit showed 4325 unbacked checks in six months of 1990. Nussle wore a paper bag with eyeholes on the House floor amid criticism from Acting Speaker Montgomery.
