Police and firemen pulled two unidentified youths from the Fox river near Carpentersville Illinois on Sunday. The raft riders became trapped when their raft snagged in the backwash and capsized.

Washington senators debate delaying welfare reform for two years to test three aid plans for families with dependent children. U S and South Vietnamese reports cite heavy U S air strikes on the Hanoi Haiphong corridor and 100 enemy attacks across South Vietnam the largest surge in over two months. Haiphong Shipyard No 3 was a main target as U S forces claim destruction of air force assets and several MiGs in September. Attacks extended to Thailand base Hubon with minor damage and no U S casualties. The carrier Newport News carried 19 sailors killed in a shipyard explosion and moved to the Philippines.
About 10 area rubbish haulers in Marion urged a thorough investigation of an $18 million waste disposal and recycling plant proposed for Eastern Iowa. Robert W. Barnett of A Hauling Service said promoters offered stock and a management role in exchange for joining, warning he would be shut out if he refused. Mayor Donald Canney stated no specifics were presented and he would comment later.
