Five day forecast calls for fair and cool conditions Friday and Saturday with lows in the 40s and highs in the 50s. Sunday cool with a brief warming on Monday, then cooler again Tuesday. Showers possible Monday and Tuesday with highs reaching 60s to 70s and lows in the 40s.

John McKeithen's $10 million suit against Time Inc for libel in the name of the state and its citizens over an Life magazine article alleging Mafia influence. The judge ruled that the people, not the state, are the sovereign, and the state cannot be defamed. Attorneys for McKeithen signaled an appeal.
A burned body of a tall young man was found Friday near a "Long live free Czechoslovakia" sign in Lyon France. Investigators said the man appeared to have set himself on fire and could not yet be identified. Police recovered burnt plastic bottle fragments and an unburned box of matches at the scene.
Fires began Friday with winds fanning numerous small blazes into infernos in Los Angeles county. Nearly half a million acres burned and over 650 structures, mostly homes, were destroyed. Mrs J W Kulhavy widow of Joseph W Kulhavy was found dead in her Cedar Rapids home on Thursday. Dr Percy Harris the Linn county medical examiner attributed the death to natural causes. Born March 24 1892 near Walford she lived 35 years in Cedar Rapids. Surviving are two sons Joseph M Mason City and Frank W Garrison seven grandchildren five great grandchildren and a sister Lot tie Mouchka Cedar Rapids. Services will be at Brush chapel at 9 am and 9:30 am in St Wenceslaus church with Rev Clarence Frana. Burial in St John's cemetery. Rosary at 7:30 pm Friday at the chapel. Casket will not be opened.
