Ex-school board leader avoids prison with suspended sentence

Patrick Lyons, former Vinton-Shellsburg school board president, received a five year suspended sentence and two years probation on perjury and election fraud charges. He faced three counts each initially, pled guilty to one count each, and pays a 750 dollar fine per count plus costs. Lyons voted and ran for office while under a prior felony, later having voting rights restored in 2006. He resigned from the school board after arrest.

Iona area man charged in child pornography case

Timothy Wilker of West Branch was indicted in U S District Court on one count of receipt and three counts of possession of child pornography. He allegedly received and possessed material on two computers and printed images between January 2004 and May 2009. He appeared in federal court and was released on bond. Trial set for November 28. If convicted, he faces five to twenty years in prison and fines up to one million dollars.
