Brian Carlson also wins High Combination for top combined scores. Illinois trout season opens along Lake Michigan through Jan. 31 with notable catches reported and hatcheries resuming full stocking. Fall color events near Cedar Rapids include hayrack rides with Percheron horses on the Sac and Fox Trail and a nature center program at Lake Meyer in Fort Atkinson.
Gov. Branstad fills vacancies on the State Advisory Board for Preserves with Jean Prior of Iowa City and Doug Smaley of Des Moines. Prior, a senior Iowa Geological Survey geologist and author, advises the board and holds a master’s from Illinois. Smalley, a Des Moines attorney and former three term Republican state representative, joins the board alongside new chairman Duane Anderson, Iowa City state archaeologist.

The recorded messages change each Monday through October and describe statewide color, the most colorful tree species, and likely peak color in different areas. Calls are long distance and billed by the telephone company.
The Recreation Vehicle Industry Association reports nearly 40 percent year to date growth through June 1982. RV manufacturers sold 189,700 units by mid year, surpassing total 1980 output. A spokesman expects 1983 to top all years since 1978 with 526,300 units. Motor homes up 56 percent, van conversions up 48 percent, towables up 26 percent.
John Bickel of McGregor argues that .22 rifles are unsafe for squirrel hunting. He recalls a past era when rifles were common but warns of ricochets and accidents on hillsides. He says shotgun use should be required and many hunters lack risk awareness.
Inventor Eugene Hochlan of Indianola Iowa showcases an automatic fishing hook rig. The device uses hinged boards and a spring to jerk the line and hook a fish when a bite occurs. Hochlan notes he has used it mainly for catfish and carp and has made several for family.

A preview duck season occurred Sept 17–21, with the second duck season starting Oct 15 north of I-80 and Oct 22 south of I-80. Goose daily bag limit is five with two Canada and two white fronted. possession twice daily. Open areas include most state lands except Otter Creek Marsh Tama County Rathbun Reservoir Union Slough Kossuth County and DeSoto Refuge region. Deer and turkey seasons begin Oct 8 with one both for turkey and deer. ruffed grouse opens Oct 8 through Jan 31, limit three, possession six.
