FBI Uniform Crime Reports show serious crime increasing 8 percent in the second quarter of 1975 from a year earlier, with six month rise at 13 percent. Attorney General Levi cautions no solace, noting crime remains a national problem as regions and all categories show gains.
The joint economic committee urged extending and expanding the 1975 tax cut by 8 to 10 billion dollars next year and launching an emergency job program to hire 1.6 million in 1976 and 1.7 million in 1977. The Democrats forecast a $70 billion 1976 deficit with the package, but expect inflation to ease and unemployment to fall if approved.
FBI Uniform Crime Report shows Cedar Rapids serious crimes up from 3900 to 4290 in January through June 1975 versus 1974. Thefts rose from 2680 to 3119, robberies from 36 to 63, forcible rapes from 2 to 9, with aggravated assaults increasing as well. national figures also up.

Linn county Sheriff Walter Grant said state law on inmate space has been violated at least three times at the Linn county jail in six months. He noted the jail capacity is 72 but last Sunday morning housed 90 inmates with many sleeping on the floor. by Monday morning counts fell to 79 as transfers occurred.
The Gazette received the 1975 Iowa State Education Association School Bell award for education reporting for the third straight year. Other honorees included Mason City Globe Gazette and North Scott Press. radio stations KRNT Des Moines and WDBQ Dubuque.
By a 3 to 2 vote the Iowa City council approved a campaign spending ordinance for future elections. It limits a candidate to 1000 dollars, 1500 for dual primary and general, with 125 dollar contribution cap and reporting for donors of 10 dollars or more. Violations bring up to 100 dollar fine or 30 days, with disqualification for elected offenders.
