Nixon in Belgrade Gains Crowded Welcomes and Handshakes

President Nixon arrived in Belgrade to a friendly crowd along a 10 mile motorcade route. He stepped into the crowd for handshakes and greetings and later attended a White House style state dinner with Tito and Jovanka. Nixon urged respect for each nation's chosen path and rights. Tito stressed independence sovereignty equality and noninterference. Nixon invited Tito to the United States but no immediate reply.

Prisoner Pleads Guilty Under Fear Claim in Post-Conviction

John L. Schaepperkoetter 26 seeks to overturn a 25 year term for robbery with aggravation and two breaking and entering counts. He alleges state pressure and fear of divine judgment influenced his plea, filed in Linn district court under post-conviction procedures. He admitted the Cedar Rapids service station robbery at gunpoint in August 1968 while an escapee from Ft. Madison penitentiary.

Ballard brothers jailed for contempt of court

Clarence L Ballard 39 of Center Point and Roger C Ballard 28 of 1314 First Ave NE were arrested by Linn County sheriff's officers on Des Moines county contempt charges for willful failure to support minor children. Clarence Ballard received two 30 day sentences and Roger Ballard one 30 day term. They were held in Linn County jail awaiting transport to Des Moines county.

28 Survive Air Crash Two Killed Near Da Nang

Ground search teams reached the wreckage of a World War II era DC-3 in mountains north of Da Nang. Officials said 28 of 30 aboard survived while two Chinese pilots from Winner Airways died. Three passengers were injured.

Addeline J Monk Dies After Short Illness At 85

Addeline J Monk 85 of 2406 Franklin Ave NE died Thursday after a short illness. Born December 25 1885 in Mower County Minnesota she lived with her daughter and son in law Arnold and Mrs Fry for 19 years. She was a member of St Pauls United Methodist Church. Surviving include Chester J Monk Cedar Rapids five grandsons and two great grandchildren. Services at Teahen chapel 10 am Saturday conducted by Dr Arnold Herbst burial Riverside Cemetery Royalton Monday 10 30 am. Friends may call Teahens Friday evening and until 9 45 am Saturday. Casket will not be open after the service.

Nurse Marie Crary dies at 47 in Emerson Nebraska

Marie Elma Crary of Emerson Nebraska died Wednesday in Sioux City at age 47. A Cedar Rapids St Luke’s School of Nursing graduate, she worked as a nurse at Meth-Wick Manor. Surviving are two sons William and Mark, daughter Carol, mother Rose Nebel, Emerson, Neb., and brother Kert Nebel. Services Saturday at 3 p.m. at St Paul’s Lutheran Emerson with Rev George Carlson assisting. Munderloh Kempf Funeral Home in charge. Burial in Emerson.
