In Des Moines Regis upset Dowling's 32 14, as Jim Wagner scored twice on 75 and 81 yard breaks and Larry Casey added a 68 yard dash. Dowling led 18 0 before Regis rallied with flaring big plays and a late Dowling score padded the margin. Wagner and Eileen starred for Regis while Mount highlighted Dowling’s ground effort.
Oelwein drives 70 yards late in the fourth quarter to seize a 12 7 lead on a 2 yard quarterback sneak by Gene Fuelling with 5 39 remaining The Huskies opened the scoring on a 25 yard Fuelling to Gustin pass set up by a 40 yard connection to Kappmeyer Prairie answered with Lyle Svoboda interception return for a touchdown and Henry Lefebvre extra point The game featured strong performances by Keith Sas ek Lyle Svoboda and Kenny Kappmeyer
Iowa City Little Hawks overpower Cedar Rapids Jefferson 50 to 13 in a Valley Conference clash. West High standout runs for multiple touchdowns as City High scores early and often, despite Jefferson's fast start on a 46 yard run by Ron Finley.
West Branch defeated Wapello 33-6 as Warren Pierce and Chuck Krall each scored twice. Pierce rushed 41 and 60 yards, Krall added a 25-yard run and a 40-yard touchdown pass from Jim Nosbish, while Nosbish connected on a 10-yard pass to Lowell Stanfield. Dick Taylor returned a kickoff 70 yards for Wapello’s lone score.
UPI dispatch reports the United States held a 38 stroke edge in the World Amateur team championship at Merion Golf Club. Jack Nicklaus led the charge with a 67 in a bid to break par for the fourth straight day, while other top players pursued a decisive final round.
The Jackson County court filed suit Wednesday to collect 9,828.75 dollars in license taxes from the Kansas City Athletics. The American League club had protested the 125 dollar per playing day tax as discriminatory and refused payment after it was imposed last fall.
Dubuque Washington used a late first quarter strike and a 67 yard drive in the second to edge Wash in a 14-7 Mississippi Valley Conference game. Washington’s defense held most of the night, while Dubuque benefited from penalties and a key 59 yard scoring play. Wash rushed for 176 yards and had 10 first downs but could not overcome two late threats that produced the decisive touchdowns.
Cedar Falls spoiled New Hampton's homecoming by scoring a 26 14 Northeast Iowa clash. Key plays featured Jim Sheerer with two touchdowns covering 1 and 20 yards, Bill Olesen 24 yards, Steve Bellis 45 yards, and Sheerer two extra points. New Hampton's Mark Messer smith had a 45 yard TD, Bob Soukup added a 10 yard score with seven extra points.
Sigourney trailed 12-0 before roaring back to edge Tama 13-12 in a South Iowa Cedar League clash. Max Wilkening sparked the comeback with two late scores, while Larry Strickler added the decisive extra point as Tama suffered its first league loss in three years. Jim Videtich and Davinn Blocker produced Tama’s early 12-point lead.
Parsons Wildcats defeat Wartburg Knights 18-12 in a conference football game. Gary Gardner to Bob Martin connected for all Parsons touchdowns, including the final 55-yard drive set by Gardner to Martin. Wartburg led 12-0 at halftime before Parsons surged in the second half.
Williamsburg quarterback Jim Lortz ran for three touchdowns, two and one yardages plus a 45 yard score to lead Williamsburg past Montezuma 18 to 0 on Friday night. Lortz tallies came on runs of 2, 1, and 45 yards as Williamsburg rolled to the win.
Brooklyn defeats Belle Plaine 22 to 0 as Larry Foster scores two rushing TDs from 10 and 20 yards and David De Wilder adds a 2-yard TD run. Bill Shagle blocks a punt for a safety, with George Rhinehart and Dick King adding extra points.
Ackley Downs Traer 25 to 6 in North Iowa Cedar action Friday night. Steve Muller scored two touchdowns on a 20 yard run and a 23 yard pass from Bill Grissel. Grissel connected 48 yards to Jim Lawton for another Ackley score. Traer’s Steve Staker had the lone Traer TD on a 56 yard run.
German light heavyweight challenger Erich Schoeppner has filed a breach of contract suit against Feature Sports Inc asking 1000000 dollars in damages. He says promoters failed to live up to a contract to fight Light Heavyweight Champion Archie Moore in Toronto. The bout was slated for July 18 then August 8 at Moore's request, but it was not held and no new date has been set.
AP reports two welterweight bouts announced for St. Nicholas Arena on the next two Mondays. October 3 features Ronnie Cohen of New Rochelle, N Y, vs Johnny Gorman of Brooklyn. October 10 presents an all New York matchup between Jerry Donovan and Bobby Bartels.
Maquoketa moves to undisputed first in the Wamac race by beating Marion 28 to 0. Harris Penrose powers the Redbirds with key drives and extra points while John Stein Whitchell and Dave Hayes each contribute as Maquoketa seals the win, Marion unable to cross the goal line.
Keokuk of the Class D Midwest league will renew a working agreement with the St. Louis Cardinals for the 1961 season and include a sophomore high school age player on its roster. John Marion, president of the Keokuk club, announced the plan.
Neal threw the lone completion of the drive for 44 yards to Ed Whitchelo who edged out of bounds at the Indian 10. Whitchelo then scored from the seven on the next play to cap the march in the third stanza.
Manchester edged Monticello 21-0 in a Wamac clash as Tom Barrett scored twice on 45 and 35 yard receptions from Terry Dunham. The Manhawks posted their second conference win, while Monticello remained unbeaten before the shutout.
Grand Mound defeated Preston 9-0 to claim the district final in the fall baseball tour. Pitchers Fey and Hoeppner held Preston to three hits while Grand Mound notched ten safeties. Cheam belted a seventh inning home run and had three hits in four at bats.
Morley defeated Monmouth 5-1 in a prep fall baseball game on Thursday. Morley capitalized on four Monmouth errors and scored three runs in the fifth inning. Simmons earned the win while allowing five Monmouth hits as Morley and Monmouth players, including Simmons and Findley Streets, Beck er and Collins, contributed to the day’s action.
The twice postponed Waterloo UPI report notes that the Tunis speedway stock car championship races are scheduled for Sunday if weather permits.
Tipton won its first season game in the Wamac conference by defeating Independence 14-0. Bill Donohue and Ken Deerberg scored all Tipton points on a 2 yard run and a 1 yard run, with Deerberg adding both extra points.
Anamosa claimed its second win in three Wamac Conference games by routing Vinton 34-7. Doug Larson starred with three touchdowns on 17 and 78 yard runs and a 31 yard reception from Gary White, while White added two rushing scores. Vinton’s lone TD came on an 8 yard run by Tom Radcliff.
Coggon handed Strawberry Point its first conference loss 20 to 6 on the homecoming night. Bill Poppe scored two touchdowns for Coggon on runs of 1 and 19 yards, with Jim Patton adding a 3-yard TD. Pat Kirby scored Strawberry Point’s lone points with a 45-yard run in the third period.
South Winneshiek of Calmar defeated Arlington 25 to 14 Friday night. Steve Iverson Earl Meyer Tim Novak and Tony Balik scored touchdowns for Calmar while Lee Westcott added both Arlington TDs on 25 yard passes from Richard Leichner. Westcott also kicked two extra points.
Hudson beat Aplington 42-18 Friday night to stay undefeated at 4-0. Dick Sloan starred with two rushing TDs from 1 and 20 yards and an 8 yard TD pass to Jim LaFrenz. Aplington mounted late scores but could not overcome the early Hudson lead.
