U S Rebuff on Currency Crisis Sparks Wide Dispute

Rome AP reports major currency powers and Britain rejected a U S compromise to end the postwar monetary crisis. European nations demand dollar devaluation against gold, a move the United States has refused. West Germany called the plan a shocker as France warned against it. The U S offered to drop the Aug 15 import surcharge if others revalue upward by about 11 percent, including 20 percent for the yen and 15 percent for the mark, a proposal presented by Paul Volcker at a three day non Communist powers conference. The plan marked a rare start toward settlement after months of deadlock.
