Election Duet Shapes Cedar Rapids At Large Contest

In Cedar Rapids an at large race pits youth against experience as candidates discuss flood recovery, city hall plans, and urban unity. One candidate, Karr, opposes a new city hall and supports using the Veterans Memorial Building to unify the east and west sides. The other candidate, Saylor, stresses long term finance, council unity, and listening to residents while weighing reinhabiting the Veterans Memorial Building versus new construction. He highlights plans like Fifteen in 5, trails, and the Third Street arts district and notes he works with Iowa Realty Commercial.

Watershed targets set to cut runoff in Iowa river basins

Four Iowa watersheds were chosen for nutrient reduction funding to slow nitrate and sediment runoff into the Mississippi. The areas range from 10 000 to 40 000 acres per watershed, with the Cedar Maquoketa North Raccoon and Boone rivers cited as major contributors. A total of 42 watersheds covering about 42 million acres will be targeted nationwide, plus a Lower Grand River area in Missouri and a Root River area in Minnesota. Monitoring will measure nutrient retention after implementing vegetation buffers and wetlands under USDA programs.
