Welfare to work in Iowa shows early progress

Iowa's welfare to work reform reduces welfare caseload by one quarter from the 40 000 peak with 30 252 families on aid in November. The plan requires Family Investment Plan recipients to contract for self sufficiency and allows earnings without benefit loss plus two years of child care and medical coverage to ease returns to work.

Akron pilots credit card red kettles for Salvation Army drive

Donors in Akron can now charge donations to the Salvation Army red kettles using a magnetic strip card reader. The test, supported by Maj. Frank Kirk, aims to boost giving and reduce thefts. A regular cash kettle remains alongside the card-enabled unit. The device, donated by a local computer consultant, costs about 3000 dollars and could roll out to other units if successful. Bell ringers hope to raise about 160000 dollars, roughly eight percent of the charity’s work.

Price index reform eyed to help balance budget

Washington sources say trimming the CPI by one point could save about 628 billion dollars over ten years, but would cut Social Security benefits and raise taxes. The Commission on the CPI plans a report next week endorsing a new index replacing the current basket.

Mare Maddy Bonds With Wild Deer At Tama Farm

At a Tama farm, a paint mare named Maddy has been seen pacing the fence line and bonding with a wild doe fawn that joined her for two weeks. The deer, likely seeking its mother, interacted with Maddy near Highway 30 although the fawn eventually left. Wildlife biologists suggest food and mistaken maternal instincts as reasons, though the doe and fawn may reconnect after mating season.
