A cold spell sweeps in tonight with a 10 to 15 degree low. Thursday brings increasing clouds and a high in the low to mid 20s. A highway sign warns speed limit 55 mph and to keep traffic flowing.
U.S. exports declined by 3.1 percent in October to 13 billion while imports edged up 0.1 percent to 15.1 billion. The October deficit reached 2.1 billion, the largest since July, with year-to-date shortfall at 24.8 billion. Oil imports fell modestly yet overall deficits persist in contributing to inflation and dollar decline. Alfred Kahn warned dollar support may lessen future oil price gains.
Alfred Kahn, head of the Council on Wage and Price Stability, warns that failing to curb inflation raises the danger of a serious recession. He explained his earlier joking reference to a banana as a slip of language and said reporters should not hear him say low mood again.
Urbana voters rejected an $680000 addition and refurbishing plan for the 70 year old school building by one vote, while Monticello again defeated a $550000 lunchroom library project and a $275000 energy savings plan. The Urbana issue failed 246 to 165 with 59.8 percent, needing 60 percent. Monticello memories a long string of defeats, with 55 percent in favor on the lunchroom and 770 to 1138 on the second proposal.
At 1:35 p.m. Tuesday a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of 16th Avenue SW and Williams Boulevard SW sent three people to St. Luke's Hospital for treatment and release. Carl R. Young, 22, drove a semitrailer eastbound on 16th Avenue SW and struck Arnold L. Swalley, 48, who was northbound on Williams Boulevard SW. No charges were filed. witnesses backed both drivers' claim of a green light.
District Attorney Joseph Freitas announced he will seek the death penalty in the gas chamber for Dan White, charged with two counts of first degree murder in the slayings of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk. White's arraignment followed the killings that stunned the city and led to state flags at half staff.
