Eisenhower Returns to Gettysburg Farm for Weekend Rest

President Eisenhower arrived at his Gettysburg farm for at least a weekend of rest after a mild stroke. White House officials say recovery is proceeding rapidly with doctors approving the trip. The visit follows a Thanksgiving day schedule and brings the president closer to normal activity as aides note improved speech and no arterial hardening.

Wyoming football coach Bob Devaney and star quarterback Lawrence Zowada were cleared of disturbing the peace charges after a hotel disturbance at the Shirley Savoy. Assistant coach Michael Corgan and guard Paul Muratore were fined $10 each, suspended, for disturbance.

Gas Fume Explosion Destroys Witwer Garage Injuries Reported

A gas fumes blast at the Witwer Grocer garage on Ninth avenue and Second street SE in Cedar Rapids caused a major fire. Three men suffered minor injuries from debris and a fourth had burns while several workers escaped. Firefighters battled the blaze for hours, with a broken gas line and fuel drums feeding flames.

Carroll Man Is Named to Banking Post in Iowa

Gov. Herschel Loveless named Joe H. Gronstal state banking superintendent to replace the late Lee Chandler. Gronstal, 39, vice-president of Carroll County State Bank, has eight years in the post and was a former state banking examiner in 1943-44. He earns an $18,000 annual salary and faces Senate confirmation. Gronstal hails from Estherville and grew up in Council Bluffs, a St. Bonaventure College graduate.

Wind and Snow Move Into Iowa From Dakotas

Strong northerly winds whip snow and cold air into Iowa with lows near zero in the north and around 10 above in the south. Ice forms on highways in Cherokee Ida Monona and Crawford counties while Carroll and Greene counties turn slick. Light snow falls in Sioux City Council Bluffs Des Moines and Elkader with more in Marengo and Cedar Rapids. Snow expected to spread statewide through Saturday morning with light totals and gusts to 40 mph. Cedar Rapids records a 26 degree 2:30 pm temp after a 38 degree high at 10 am.

Man Arrested in Abilene for Doctor Swindle Case

A federal indictment charges Jesse Carroll Nance with using the mails to defraud Dr D T White of Williamsburg and multiple victims across Florida Louisiana Texas and Arkansas. The fraud total likely reaches hundreds of thousands with about 35000 traced to Iowa. Nance was arrested in Abilene Texas and arraigned before a U S commissioner.

Alburnett Man Recalls Narrow Fire At Witwer Garage

Myrell Jones a 53 year old gasoline transport driver from Alburnett survived a Friday morning blaze at the Witwer Grocer Company garage. He described climbing from his truck just before the explosion that blew out the south wall and touched off the fire. Jones suffered burns to the back of his neck and hands and escaped to the north end of the building. Fire Chief Jesse Hunter said fumes built up inside the closed garage and ignited from a heater in the southwest corner.
